AHMHS Historic Preservation Internship for College Students

Announcing the AHMHS Historic Preservation Internship for College Students

The purpose of the Aurora History Museum and Historic Sites internship is to provide financial support to a local college student* for research or projects related to Aurora’s history and/or cultural diversity. Applicants must currently be a college student, either undergraduate or graduate level, and able to consistently show up in person at the Aurora History Museum or Historic Sites Office throughout the internship.

This internship is designed to provide hands-on research and project experience to a local college student interested in history, historic preservation or closely related field. The student will work under the guidance of the Historic Preservation Specialist and the Historic Preservation Assistant. Aurora History Museum and Historic Sites staff cannot ensure academic credit with your institution. Student must work with their college/university to receive credit hours, if this is desired.

The total stipend amount is $2,500, and the student should expect to put in 135 hours if they are receiving academic credit at their college or university and 105 hours if they are not. These hours must be documented with the Historic Preservation staff. The awarded amount will be paid at the end of the internship when the Historic Preservation Specialist reviews the completed work to assure that the student finished the project. Funding is graciously provided by the Aurora Museum Foundation.

*While students are not required to live in Aurora, they should live in the metro area and be able to come to the History Museum and Historic Sites Office regularly for research and engagement with staff.

After combining the scores, the interview committee will discuss the candidates, determine the top scorers and select a student for the internship. The student shall be notified by phone on the Award Announcement Date listed in at the beginning of the application form.
Please note: The student will be required to sign a form committing to the internship in the time frame allotted.

Deliverables

The intern will need to submit a brief report of information uncovered during research, provide photos taken or other items depending on the nature of their project to the Historic Preservation Specialist. Intern will also be required to give a presentation to the Aurora Museum Foundation, the funding entity, to share what they learned and how this experience benefited them.
