Community gardens are a critical component of Aurora's sustainability vision. A community garden is a shared green space created and cultivated by volunteers to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs for personal or community use. Aurora has 22 public community gardens where residents can reserve a plot for the season. Plot fees cost about $45 for a growing season (fees vary by location; ability to pay is often considered). Plots fill up quickly. Contact a garden near you (listed below) to learn more and apply.

About the Aurora Community Garden Network 

The Aurora Community Garden Network (ACGN) is a collaborative group of community garden leaders and members supported by the city of Aurora.

ACGN celebrates the diversity of community gardens across Aurora and works to build a gardening community. The network supports gardeners in shaping their own food systems by providing resources such as seeds, tools and volunteer support, along with shared knowledge on water conservation, sustainability and best practices for successful gardening.

Dig in Aurora Community Garden Competition

The annual Dig in Aurora Community Garden Competition is a light-hearted, friendly competition that brings together community gardens from across Aurora to connect with fellow gardeners, exchange ideas and celebrate the joy of growing together.

The 2025 Dig in Aurora Community Garden Competition Awards saw a fantastic turnout, with nine gardens participating. Congratulations to the Murphy Creek, Taste of Home at Fulton Academy and DeLaney Farm community gardeners for earning awards. Murphy Creek Community Garden took home the coveted Golden Trowel Award, recognizing the dedication, creativity and fun that gardeners put into making their garden truly special.

A heartfelt thank-you to 2025 sponsors, Aurora Water and Nick’s Garden Center, for their generous support. We also extend our appreciation to our judges for their time and expertise: Sydney Quinn and Andrea Zimmerman from the Village Exchange Center, and Colette Haskell from Nick’s Garden Center.

Volunteers Wanted

Aurora’s community gardens welcome volunteer support from the community, no prior garden membership required. Throughout 2026, volunteers can get involved in a variety of projects, including garden clean-ups, summer weeding, event support and more.
