As the city of Aurora improves its infrastructure offerings to its current and future residents, demands for more infrastructure, improvements and repairs also grow. On any given work day, there can be as many as 100 active work zones within the city.
Traffic engineering staff make every effort to minimize the impact of these work zones to the traveling public. In addition to reviewing and approving the plans to ensure they are safe and compliant with all regulations, staff also work with contractors to seek alternatives to street closures and minimize the number of lane closures and their duration. Staff also try to keep conflicting work zones from overlapping in time or space. In most cases, these efforts are successful. However, on occasion, alternatives are not available and since we are dealing with the outdoor environment, even the best planned projects get delayed by weather, special events or unknown conditions, resulting in confusion and/or unplanned congestion.

Both directions of 38th Avenue between Tower and Himalaya roads will have one lane closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Oct. 8 due to a city project to improve medians.

Flat Rock Trail lane closure and shift (at Evans)
Northbound Flat Rock Trail at Evans Avenue will have one lane closed and shifted from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only from Sept. 14 to 23 due to a private utility installing new utilities.
Gartrell lane shift
Both directions of Gartrell Road between Aurora Parkway and East Dry Creek Road will have one lane shifted left around the clock through July 27, 2027, due to a city project constructing enhanced traffic flow.
Havana lane closures (at Mississippi)
Both directions of Havana Street at Mississippi Avenue will have intermittent lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Oct. 2 due to a private utility working to maintain utilities.
Hoffman lane closures
Both directions of Hoffman Boulevard between Del Mar Circle and Yuba Street will have intermittent lane closures rolling several blocks at a time from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Nov. 30 due to a city project to maintain infrastructure. Use alternate route; expect slow traffic.
Jackson Gap Way (between 60th and 56th)
Southbound Jackson Gap Way between 60th and 56th will have one lane closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Sept. 25 due to a private project to install new infrastructure.
Louisiana full closure (between Uravan and Tower)
Eastbound Louisiana Avenue between Uravan Street and Tower Road will be fully closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Oct. 1 due to a city project to perform surface repairs. The alternate route will use Mississippi Avenue between Uravan and Tower; follow the signed detour.
Mexico full closure (between Telluride and Buckley)
Westbound Mexico Avenue between Telluride Street and Buckley Road will be fully closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays only through Oct. 8 due to a city project to perform surface repairs. The alternate route will use Telluride Street between Uravan Street and Iliff Avenue. Follow the signed detour.

Pitkin full closure (between Wagontrail and Pagosa)
Southbound Pitkin Street between Wagontrail Parkway and Pagosa Way will be fully closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Sept. 12 to 14 due to a city water project to install new utilities. The alternate route will use Buckley from Quincy to Wagontrail.

Parker/Quincy/Smoky Hill Intersection Improvements Project
Construction of the Parker/Quincy/Smoky Hill Intersection Improvement Project has begun and will continue through at least December 2026, with additional time built in to ensure the project is completed safely and successfully.
Construction activity will start at 7:30 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

- Westbound center lane closure on Quincy Avenue from Atchison Way to Parker Road 24/7.

Project update:
The traffic control shift for the two westbound right-turn lanes onto northbound Parker Road has been completed. Asphalt work is currently ongoing at Carson and Quincy, as well as Smoky Hill and Quincy.

56th and Hudson Road Closures and Project

Please note: Flood damage has restricted access to both 56th Avenue and Hudson Road. Heavy rainfall undermined the roadways and destroyed the road surface in some locations. The road closures are necessary to protect the traveling public while the project team works to reopen the roadways. Project information will continue to be posted on the project webpage as it becomes available.

I-70 pavement repairs from Chambers to E-470
The Colorado Department of Transportation and contract partner, Villalobos Concrete, Inc., are repairing and replacing concrete pavement in both directions of Interstate 70 from Chambers Road to the E-470 exchange. The purpose of this state and federally funded project is to improve safety and mobility along a heavily traveled 6.6-mile stretch of the I-70 corridor.
Work includes replacing and grinding concrete pavement panels to provide a safe, smooth driving surface, and repairing and repaving the decks of four bridge structures within the project limits. The project has an anticipated duration of 16 months.
Work will take place Monday to Sunday, with working hours split between daytime and overnight shifts. Schedule adjustments will be made during the winter months.
Traffic impacts:
-Various lane closures will be in place on eastbound I-70 during overnight hours from Sunday, Sept. 13 to Thursday, Sept. 17.
-Eastbound I-70 Express Lane Closure (Sunday to Tuesday): The Express Lane will be closed east of Peoria Street (Exit 281), designated by a red X lane control signal. The Express Lane closure will be in place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 to Tuesday, Sept. 15.
-Double to single left lane closures on eastbound I-70 (Sunday to Thursday): Double left lane closures will exist on eastbound I-70 for about 1000 feet starting at Chambers Road (MP 282.561), shifting to a single left lane closure to the Tower Road exit (Exit 286).
-The lane closures on eastbound I-70 will be in place from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 to Thursday, Sept. 17.
-Changing conditions and delays can be expected and caution is advised.

ARTA I-70 Aerotropolis Parkway Interchange Project
The Aerotropolis Regional Transportation Authority and contract partner, Ames Construction, is constructing the I-70 Aerotropolis Parkway Interchange in Adams County.
Part of ARTA’s planned regional transportation infrastructure improvements across the district, the purpose of the project is to provide much-needed access to developments from Aurora and Adams County, and to improve connectivity to Denver International Airport and the adjacent area served by the Aerotropolis Regional Transportation Authority.

East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit coming to Aurora
East Colfax BRT Construction is now extending into Aurora, from Yosemite to I-225:
• Construction will be completed in a single phase, with work occurring simultaneously at both eastbound and westbound stations.
• Traffic control cones and lane closures will be used in active construction zones as work progresses.
• Traffic will remain open in the center lanes of East Colfax Ave. throughout the project.
• Work will progress block by block, with each section expected to take about 3 to 6 months to complete.
• Construction work for the side-running stations will occur within designated work zones that include portions of the sidewalk.
